Here are some active research projects that I supervise/co-supervise.
1. Integrated system to assist elders
Description
This research combines a telepresence robot, a smart home, and a smartwatch to assist an elderly person who lives independently in his house. The elder can use the robot to do teleconference with his caregiver. The robot is equipped with Lidar, so it can perform SLAM and navigation to enable the robot to move autonomously. The elder can monitor and control the smart home via the mobile app. The system is also equipped with a camera as the pose detection system. The smartwatch is used to monitor the heart rate, the taken steps, and the burnt calories of the elders.

Each component may interact with each other via MQTT. When an elderly person is in an abnormal condition (for example: his heart rate is lower than the threshold, his pose is sleeping on the floor), a robot will autonomously move towards the elder’s location so the caregiver can communicate with the elder.

2. Automatic product defect detection using deep learning
Description
In some factories, the quality control of products is usually done manually by a human worker. In this research, we propose an automatic defect detection system in tissue packages using deep learning (YOLO). NVidia Jetson Nano is used as the edge controller. Various cameras (RGB, depth) are used to capture the object images.

A complete sorting system (based on PLC) is used here. A pneumatic actuator is utilized to push the bad product to a particular location. All device status can be monitored and controlled via the internet. NodeRed is used to gather various hardware and software of the system.

The research has been funded by Hibah Matching Fund (Kedaireka) in 2022.

3. Low-cost industrial internet of things system
Description
This line of research aims to develop a low-cost industrial IoT system that is suitable for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). The usages of open source software components (such as Node Red, Grafana, MQTT, etc. ) are important to keep the budget low.

4. Tool use learning and tool creation by a robot
Description
This research is a continuation of my Ph.D. research with Prof. Claude Sammut (UNSW Sydney). We investigate the usage of the relational approach by a robot so it can learn how to use a tool and create a novel one if it is needed.
In the future, we want to incorporate the Large Language Model to improve our system.
Grant
My PhD has been funded by BPP-LN Dikti, and recently my collaboration was funded by World Class Professor program in 2023.

5. Predictive maintenance of an induction motor
Description
We want to build a machine learning model to predict the lifetime of induction motor. The accurate prediction leads to optimal overall system performance as the motor will be maintained (or even replaced) in the optimal time.

Here are some other topics that I and my students working on.
- PLC, HMI, and SCADA application in various systems
- IoT applications for smart farming (hydroponic, aquaponic)
